Thanks for thinking ahead by posting a HijackThis log and not waiting for one of us to request you to post it.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

What is the processor type and speed?

    How much RAM is installed?

What size is the hard drive and how much free space is there?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Adobe Reader 6.0 and Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2.15 are both very outdated. Version 8.1.2 of Adobe Reader can be downloaded from here and Version 1.6.0.07 of Sun Java can be downloaded from here.

Download and save both new versions.

Uninstall both old versions. (Note: If Sun Java has multiple old versions installed, uninstall them all.)

Go into C:\Program Files\Java and then delete any leftover folders.

Install Adobe Reader and then restart.

Install Sun Java and then restart.

Run a new scan with HijackThis and then post the new log here. There are some programs running in the background that don't need to be doing so, so we're going to trim down the startup load.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure about these log entries:

    O4 - Startup: MRI_DISABLED

    O4 - Global Startup: MRI_DISABLED

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\tmlsp.dll

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\tmlsp.dll

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\tmlsp.dll

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\tmlsp.dll

Let's see if an authorized log expert will jump in to assist.

ok thanks for your help. i looked in System information and this is what it said about the laptop....

    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~1992 Mhz
    BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 07.00T, 4/2/2001
    SMBIOS Version 2.3
    Total Physical Memory 256.00 MB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sys

....it looks like the RAM is quite low. Could that be the only real problem with this laptop? All that i do on it is Email and homework.....

now about the adobe uninstall's and updates, ill work on that right now.

256 MB of RAM  is definitely too little for running Windows XP, and is the main reason why that computer is running like a snail.

If you can provide the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer, I can determine how much RAM it supports and what type of RAM module that it uses. The age of that laptop indicates that it may use PC-133 modules, but I need to confirm that. The correct model number should be on a sticker on the bottom of the case.

flavallee is on the right track .
a good place to start is to clean house . ATF-Cleaner is a nifty free little program to delete all temp files cookies and a general cleanup . http://www.snapfiles.com/get/atfcleaner.html
startup programs is another reason for poor and sluggish proformance . I have only four in the startup but have seen people with over 20 .Check this; http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml , and look here too; http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm , and click start, run, and then type in this; msconfig.exe to open up the System Configuration Tool, then click the startup tab, which also shows what starts and runs with XP. uncheck what you don't want to start up . And here is a helpful site to trim down some services; http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
When done run defrag . Run Hijackthis and paste the log in your next post . Hope this has helped .
