I wasn't sure whether this was this was the right thread for this problem but here goes.

My laptop is really slow at the moment, it takes ages to do things and it's really annoying me and can't afford a new laptop.
I have run a virus scan with Kaspersky internet security 2010 and found no viruses, I have run a scan with windows defender and found nothing, I have defragmented a few times recently which hasn't helped at all.
I have also done some things that I found on websites like only allowing browsing history to be stored for a day and doing disk checks and disk cleanups but they haven't helped either.
I also have FCleaner and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, but scans with them haven't helped.

If anybody can help me that would be great! (y)

djadamson:

I strongly advise you to stay away from

FCleaner

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

and any other registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tuneup program, no matter what they claim they can do. They will do nothing to improve speed or performance. What they can do is break certain programs and damage the operating system.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Is the computer specifications next to your username up-to-date and accurate?

Yes my computer specifications are up to date and accurate so I have 2GB of RAM. Thanks for the advice about cleaners, boosters and optimizers, so should I uninstall the FCleaner and Eusing Registry Cleaner then?

I would uninstall them.

Then do this please:

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Right-click COMPUTER, then click Properties. What's listed in the "Windows edition" section?

You don't appear to have either the SP1 or the SP2 upgrade installed.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The startup load isn't bloated, but it could use some trimming down.

I don't see anything suspicious in the log....doesn't always mean something isn't there. I will leave you with Flav for now and we can check for any nasties after.

About my windows version i have vista basic, i was supposed to ask about upgrading in my last thread but i forgot and it was closed by one of the forum mods so i'll ask now.
Do i have to upgrade to service pack 1 first and then 2 afterwards or can i upgrade straight to 2?

You need to download and install the SP1 upgrade before you can download and install the SP2 upgrade.

Unless you have automatic updates turned off in your computer, you should've been alerted a long time ago to download and install the service packs.

Read here.

Here is the Microsoft download link for the SP1 upgrade.

Here is the Microsoft download link for the SP2 upgrade.

Because of their extremely large size, you should download and save them and then burn them off to CD-R's.

Ok i have installed service pack 1 and 2 now, they installed without any problems :D.

Also about the start up boot i was told, in my last thread, to use system lookup and i removed the start up items that the website suggested that i didn't need anymore.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
