So let me preface this by saying I don't have a Facebook account and I don't want to have to create one. However, there are some pages that I follow regularly.

The display options I prefer are "All Comments" and "Newest" (not a fan of "Most relevant" but it's there as well, of course. Most of the pages have those three options but lately, one of the ones that has a lot of activity that I follow more closely has suddenly changed the options and "Newest" has been replaced by "Oldest". Once I've read a thread I prefer to use "Newest" so I see the most recent ones on top and now I can't do that. Does anyone have any idea how I can change that back, keeping in mind that I can't log in and change settings. :)

I use Firefox 83.0 (the latest version). I have NoScript and AdBlock Plus and have tried turning AdBlock Plus off and allowing everything in NoScript. I've also cleared the cache and cookies but nothing changes. Also, IE11 doesn't display any comments at all and seems it's not supported.

P.S. I can't provide the URLs to the sites as that would reveal my location. :)

Unfortunately, without a Facebook account, you will be unable to change the order in which you view Facebook posts on the Internet. Only Facebook members or account holders can customize the order of Facebook posts they view. Ordering options are up to those who post posts on Facebook to choose.

Do you have same issue with other browsers or just firefox?
Internet Explorer 11 is not supported and doesn't display any of the replies at all. Palemoon doesn't display any replies either.

Thanks. I figured that was the case but it's odd that it recently changed.

If you don't find it too much to try out with Chrome or MS Edge, then you could figure out whether site owner has changed this setting.

I don't use facebook but some official facebook resources seem to imply that site owners can customize their pages not by just using facebook interface but also with public facebook API.
And if I didn't get it wrong and that's the case then you're probably out of luck.

I don't want anything to do with Chrome and I tried to download the version of Edge available for Windows 8.1 and my system froze up so I won't be trying any of those.

I'm pretty sure you're right about that. Thanks for trying though. 👍
