I cannot get facebook to load on my laptop through wifi, any browser. Cleared cache/history, not using proxies, no firewall, all other pages load fine, m.facebook.com loads and works fine.

I read another thread about checking the windows HOSTS file. I feel a bit stupid, but i couldn't find it in the system32 folder, even with hidden files/folders visible.

I downloaded malwarebytes and scanned, came up with 2 objects, removing them didn't fix the problem. I don't have antivirus software. Periodically i will download one and scan before i remove it again, haven't had any problems. I haven't checked with an antivirus yet because i really doubt that's the problem, but maybe i should. I am running windows 7 x64.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    For Windows 7 64-bit, look in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\etc.

i set it to show hidden files/folders as well as display protected system files/folders and still nothing. I can screencapture what is there if that would help.

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.

    2- Run the program.

3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.

4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply. Do not attach it.

6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

    For Windows 7 and Vista:

If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, run HijackThis as Administrator or disable the UAC first.

OK, the log isn't showing what I needed.

    Try the following:

    1. Type Notepad.exe in the Search box (Start > Search), so that it appears in the program list (or browse to it)
    2. Right-click Notepad.exe and choose Run as Administrator.
    3. Now browse to the HOSTS file and open it in the elevated Notepad instance.

If still no luck, run HijackThis again.

Click the Open the Misc Tools section button.

Click on Open hosts file manager.

Do you see any entries for Facebook in there?

Right, but where do i browse to find the HOSTS file? I cannot find the directory you posted C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\etc. or C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\etc and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers (including subfolders) does not seem to contain a file named HOSTS. Could this be user error on my part?

With Notepad opened as Administrator, also have a look into: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.

    Well, now we're getting somewhere!

    Delete those two entries.

Once you are finished, go up to 'File' and click 'Save'.

If using Notepad to edit the file, make sure to change the Save as Type: box to All files. Otherwise, Notepad may add a .txt extension to the file which will keep it from working. If you don't have your system set to show extensions, it's easy to miss that.

    Next,

    Browse to Facebook!

Okay, i did as you instructed, deleted the facebook entries and saved the file as all types to replace the original. Facebook is still giving connection timeout in firefox and internet explorer. If most entries in the host file (since i've not edited it myself until now) are likely from malware, how do i go about clearing them? Can i just manually remove them, are there certain things that need to be there?

A normal Windows 7 hosts file looks like the following:

Any other entries are usually put there by malware (unless edited by you), so you should really install an antivirus soon.

Check your hosts file again to make sure the entries are not back. Malware may be preventing any change.
