I tried to install Vista over XP Pro (upgrade) and it failed. Now when I boot I come to a screen saying a windows install failed and tells me how to try a reinstall -- which, of course does not work. I suspected a problem in my hard drive, so I installed a new one and cloned my old system onto it and made it the boot drive.
When I tried to install Vista, I got the error message that Vista could not tell if there was an operating system and had to do a clean install. I am totally backed up so I am not concerned about losing info, but I do not want to install all my programs and settings.
I assume that somewhere there are files that trigger the boot up message. How do I delete them?
