Failed to query TCP/IP

    we recently got a tower given to us, and when you try to fix the connection the message says windows could not finish the repairing problem because the following atcion can not be completed:
    Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed.
    I am at my wits end with this thing does someone have any suggestions?

    What version of Windows is it running? Is this a wired or wireless connection? What is the make/model of the modem or router you're connecting to?

    We are currently using windows xp professional. We have a cable modem that is is run through a wirelessa router(netgear) as we also have a laptop. I appreciate that you are trying to help me, it means alot, this computer is for my mother who is termianly ill.

    Connect with a wired connection to the computer.


    First off, let's do a stack reset.


    TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

    Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

    In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

    Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

    Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

    Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

    Reboot the machine.



    If that doesn't improve things, I'd like to see this.


    Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

    Please respond to all the following steps.

    1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
    2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
    3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

    It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

    To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.



    Finally, Please post this.



    Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

    In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

    Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    IPCONFIG /ALL

    Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
    Paste the results in a message here.

    If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
