FASTFAT file corrupt

    My XP Home edition on my pc has suddenly crashed with a sys 32 error. When I try to reinstall from Disc it stops and tells me I have a corrupt or missing fastfat file. How do I reinstall the file or clear the HD to start a complete reinsall.
