Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3330 CPU @ 3.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9
    Processor Count: 4
    RAM: 7886 Mb
Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics, -1792 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: 249 GB (210 GB Free); D: 200 GB (58 GB Free); E: 1412 GB (1165 GB Free);
    Motherboard: ASRock, H61M-DG3/USB3
    Antivirus: AVG Antivirus, Disabled

I recently had to complete a complete re-install of Windows on my computer following a hard drive failure. I'm using exactly the same version of such as was on the previous hard drive, and have completed all the necessary Windows Updates in the meantime.

I've been able to recover in an undamaged state virtually all My Documents from the old hard drive, using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, that is, photographs, Word doc's, etc.

I've tried to install Microsoft Office, again using exactly the same discs and version as with the old hard drive, that is, Office 2000 (sufficient for my purposes), but I seem to be having an issue - possibly file association - thus this posting.

I cannot seem to open the recovered doc's - created with the same version of Office - with Microsoft Word, which only open with WordPad, and appear with masses of gobbledygook. Similarly, when I prepare a new Word document, it initially appears ok on the screen until I close and save it. On trying to re-open the document, again it will only open with WordPad, and again with masses of gobbledygook.

I've tried un-installing Office and re-installing to no avail. When I've tried to employ the relevant compatibility pack it says it doesn't recognise the required version of Office as being on the computer.

I've also attempted, using the 'Associate File Type ... with a Specific Programme' function from the Control Panel, to change the programme type associated with .doc documents from Word Pad to Word, but can't identify Word as an option to change it to, even though I've installed it on the computer.

What is peculiar, as I've said, is it's the same versions of Windows and Office that I used in the build on the last hard drive with no issues.

Many thanks in anticipation of any advice on this one...

    Andy

If you go to Control Panel >> Default Programs >> Associate a file type with a program.

Then you'll be able to set the "doc" extension to open with Word.

    Many thanks for your reply.

As I explained, if probably not very well, I've tried that already. When I do, Word does not come up as an possible option for 'association' instead, nor can it be found when I try to look for it. This despite it having been installed.

    Cheers

Did you activate MS Office with the license key after installation?

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:
    • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
    • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
    • Click "Continue"
    • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
    • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
    • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

What is the brand of this computer and have you changed any hardware such as the motherboard or hard drive?

It is not a branded computer. I had it built seven (?) years ago approx. to specification, but without software.

As above, I've recently had to replace the original Seagate hard drive with another Seagate hard drive, following the failure of the original. It is otherwise the same computer.

Given my lack of technical know how, a mate helped me with the Windows re-build, onto which we applied all the updates. I then installed the Office software, using the same discs as used previously.

The only difference, therefore, is the hard drive, which is 2TB rather than 1TB. In every other respect, the build, software installation, etc., is exactly the same. It is only this Office Suite which seems to be problematical. The computer is otherwise functioning perfectly.

Unfortunately for you the license key is from an Acer and therefore cannot be used on this machine which means it's not genuine. As such, we cannot assist with installing anything on this computer until you make it genuine by purchasing a valid key and changing it.

    jmatt,

I've deleted your two posts. Please do not offer any assistance when a Moderator or Administrator is questioning the validity of the machine until the OK is given.
