On my version of windows whenever I search for a specific word in my files (that have PDFs in them) it usually shows which PDFs have the word in them. but recently it has not shown those PDFs with the word in them I've done everything I can think of from ending the search and turning it on again, updating adobe reader dc, etc. and at this point I am out of ideas on what to do

It would be helpful for starters by telling us the make & model of the your computer?
Also please download our free system info utility from the following link:
https://static.techguy.org/download/tsginfo.exe
After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.
Information about your computer will appear.
Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

File Explorer has to be the most inefficient way to search. I have never used it so I decided to give it a try. I ended up stopping it.

I then used this
https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/everything.html
and in a matter of a few seconds it showed me 189 pdf files.

The other search tool I use is this
https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/agent_ransackfilelocator_lite.html

Try Search Everything by voidtools first and see if it does what you want.

If you know where the pdf files are located, the 2nd tool allows you to put in more information so fewer files are searched.

I too use "Everything" to do most of my local searching!
