A couple of days ago I restarted my Vista PC and all of my desktop files lost their names and displayed only a date with the time modified below them. If I look at properties the name is still at the top of each file or folder.
This is the same for all directories that I look at. There is one column (date modified) that can be seen. If I right-click at the top of each column, I can pick filename from the choices but only the name shows up and no icon to the the left. In fact the associated icons show up to the left of the date modified.
I keep current on anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware software and running multiple scans did not find anything unusual.
Also there are a number of system apps that will not work. Msconfig, system restore and windows update either will not open or open up briefly and then close down.
I think that I may need to do a repair or reinstall of Vista. I haven't found anyone having similar issues when doing some extensive searches.
    Thanks for any replies.
