After downloading a Modem Booster I am having trouble installing it, a - SEVERE - warning appears saying that there is a - GENERAL FILE TRANSFER ERROR - Check Target Location and try again. This is a zip file and it automatically fills in the target, it also gives me the option to Browse -
Can anyone tell me what the correct target should be.
Also all downloading has slowed to a snails pace and pages can take up to a minute to open, I have a 56K modem, Running Windows 98 on a HP Pavilion 8670,
Cheers. Chalky

Hiya

Is Modem Booster the name of the software? The reason why you may be getting slow downloads may not be due to your modem but with your System Rescouces.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32. On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. copy/paste the list here.

Hiya Eddie,

I've pasted my start up below, anything in there I don't need?

I've also given up on the accelerator, it was one I downloaded from ZD NET, can't remember the name of it now but I've gone back to Gozilla, I know it's spyware but all's back to how it was before I uninstalled it so untill it causes me any problems or I can find one as good that's not spyware I'll stick with it.

Cheers.

Hiya

If you want some alternatives to Gozilla that aren't spyware, try

Filehound, GetIt, Fresh Download, Download Express

These can all be found at http://www.webattack.com if you use the Search option.

Anyway, back to the list.

ctfmon.exe: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features

Go!Zilla: Spyware, but you know that already.

SystemTray: Where your clock is. Keep.

ScanRegistry: Scans your registry so that you can restore the system. Keep.

AVG_CC: AVG anti-virus control center. Loads a System Tray icon that let's you access the antivirus program. Available via Start -> Programs - not required

Keyboard Manager: One-touch Multimedia Keyboard for HP systems. When you connect to the net it contacts HP at network startup. You have to disable it if you don't want this to happen but that will prevent ALL extra buttons from working though. Up to you.

LoadPowerProfile: Power management specifics such as monitor shut-off, system standby, etc. Keep

Avgserv9.exe: Background monitoring program for AVG anti-virus. Required if that is your anti-virus program

Now, if you want toremove any of these, go to Run and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck. Apply and restart. If you are unsure, you can do each seperately, but reboot each time.

As there isn't much, have you emptied your Tempory Internet Files lately? Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Tempory Internet Files, click Delete Files. DON'T delete offline material.

Also, do you defrag?

Thanks Eddie, That was quick!

I had just found the link to Fresh Downloads on the Reviews page here, your mail came in as it finished downloading. Do I have to uninstall Gozilla before I Install this one.

I'm just going to try your suggested tweaks now, one thing more though, ( Sorry, pain I know ) - ctfmon.exe - I was trying out a trial XP office disk that Microsoft sent me, after deciding I preferred the office 2000 that I'm used to, I uninstalled Office XP using its own uninstall so how do I get rid of this in Start Up, apart from unchecking it, how can I wipe it out completely.

Cheers.

Hiya

The sad thing is, I'm here most nights so I am always keeping my eye open. :p

Anyway, as for Gozilla, yes, uninstall it. I also suggest you get AddAware www.lavasoftusa.com
Install and run it, ensuring that deep registry scan is enabled. You can remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you are unsure, copy/past the list.

Do this after you have removed Gozilla.

As for ctfmon.exe you may want to have a look at this. It dosen't recommend uninstalling but something else:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q282/5/99.ASP

I'm off in 20 mins as there is a film on, but back after.
