Using: Win98, PIII, 96MB

I am in the midst of trying to rid my computer of 10+ programs (I am assuming they are some sort of spyware or evil .exe) that refuse to go away and have created millions of pop-ups and have so far thwarted my attempt to install Norton Antivirus & Firewall ('04) and have also seemed to diable my CD-ROM drive...just to rub it in.

The files are located in my C:\Windows folder (The files themselves do not show-up in their folders when I am viewing the files within Windows) but the file paths always list a "/dk" value at the end of the line. For instance: "C:\Windows\Q78JQNJJ4.exe /dk" . What is that "/dk"? IS it some sort of DOS value or setting that will help me find and rid myself of these files? Just wondering.

Also, I thought I had found these files before and deleted them, but one or all of them seem to continually return and load when I restart. I ran "msconfig" and tried to disable them from there, but they come back anyway.

Any help? Thanks!

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

then reboot &

Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &

Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. .(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

wow, thanks. I hope you were able to cut and paste all of that to save yourself the typing time.

I have Spybot and it works very well, but I've never used Adware, so I'll download that. Hopefully with those two programs I'll be able to fix my mess. Thanks again.

(any idea what the "/dk" is though? -- I'm just curious)

What is a hijckthis log and how do I create or find it? Thanks again!

I ran AdAware and found an incredible amount of spyware.

okay, nevermind, I found Hijackthis and downloaded it. Easy enough.

I attached the hijackthis log file. It didn't look to contain anything too unusual, so please let me know what's up with it.

Also, in XP I know there is a Messenger service that you can turn off to stop individuals from accessing your system while online...is there a Win98 version of Messenger that can be turned off? Thanks for the help!

(I realize that I'm asking Win98 questions on an XP, etc. forum: my bad. I realized it too late)
