I was was working on an excel sheet from a usb that was accidentally knocked out. I put the usb back in straight away and clicked save on the sheet, various information windows popped up saying the file location couldnt be found and a temporary file was created, the window suggested restoring the file and saving it as a renamed file (currently the system called it by a random assortment of about 8 numbers that a stupidly didn't copy down)

I followed other forum advice to open the terminal and command "open /tmp" or "open $TMPDIR" neither of these paths led to the correct temp file.

Any help is much appreciated.
