I have a dell latitude E6510 with a fingerprint reader on the right hand side. I did a fresh install of windows 7 (specs will be below) and installed all the dell drivers needed for the device per dells page on it. but it will not work and i get the following message "their are no fingerprint readers attached to this computer or all readers are in use by another program" i have installed all windows 7 updates since the fresh install of the computer. all the other drivers on the computer seem to be working. The blue tooth is fine and so are the sound buttons on the top right. but the finger print reader is still not coming online. device manager.PNG fingerprint.PNG

double click the unknown device, and check out the hardware ID's on the driver details tab; it should look like PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24DF&SUBSYS_01681028&REV_02.

The VEN_ is the vendor ID, the DEV_ is the device id; enter both of them at http://pcidatabase.com/. That will give you the details you need to track down the driver. Don't hesitate to post back here; it's a lot to swallow at once.

Okay, I'm currently at work and it just got very worky, so I'm going to ask an associate to step in. He's currently offline, so it may be a bit.

What's the exact "service tag" number and "express service code" number on that Dell Latitude E6510 laptop?

Did you install the Intel chipset driver first before installing the other drivers?

According to service tag number 3X8QTM1, you have THIS Dell Latitude E6510 laptop.
It shipped in July 2010 in the U.S.A. and came with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

THIS appears to be the Windows 7 64-bit driver that you need for that fingerprint scanner device.

That laptop's support site has a fingerprint scanner driver for Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit, so that device should work with both bit versions.

Let's make sure there isn't an issue with the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit operating system that's installed in that laptop.
Download MGADiag and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program.
Click "Continue".
Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
Click the "Copy" button, then leave the report window open.
Paste the report back here in your next reply.
