My PC is connected to DSL via a Linksys router (hooked to a main PC in same office). Sometimes I can not access internet via "internet explorer" or AOL. I can be on AOL and be knocked off and on and off and on. Sometimes I can not open my emails at all. Sometimes everything works fast and efficiently; sometimes it works sooooooooo slowly and lously.

What could be the possible cause(s)?????

My operating system is Windows XP home edition 2002 and I have 1 GB RAM. I have deleted unused programs, defraged the system and deleted my internet cookies and accumulated files.

Where do I start to remedy this situation?????
    Your help is appreciated.

    is your ISP AOL
I have a few family members on AOL who have this issue - one day works fine - next it does not work correctly - most have changed to another ISP and now have no problems

    model of router

try an IP and ping test

when its working do all the below tests
then when it stops - repeat all the test
and post both sets of results

    ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

    ONE ---------------------------------
    start
    run
    cmd
    ipconfig /all

    rightclick in the box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

    TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

    IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

    ------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below

    start
    run
    cmd

    C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping {the default gateway ipaddress you got above }

    C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping google.com
    C:\Documents and Settings\wayne>ping 64.233.187.99

wow - your instructions sound complicated, but I will do my best. As soon as I am able to run both tests, I will post on this thread.

AOL is one provider, but I also have DSL so I don't need to use AOL. I can get online with Internet Explorer.

My router is a Linskys wireless-G 2.4GHz 54 Mbps Broadband Router - model WRT54G. This is also connected with a Westell Model 6100DSL Router.

I know a lot of people who use AOL and a lot of people who dislike it. My husband is getting a bit fed up with their service these days as well.

    Thanks,
    Salty123

just so you know - I am still working on your instructions. Am having difficulty getting ping test when AOL is not working 'cuz it goes off and back on quickly sometimes. I have to be at or run to the computer when I hear AOL say "goodbye" . By the time I get there it is often coming back on. But I am working on it.

You may have spyware on your PC slowing it down....

so for the On/Off issue its NOT the PC as the other one does the same

so its either AOL, modem or routernOT your PC
are they both cabled to the router ?

    ETAF-

finally did the 2nd test, but it took forever to send to a 2nd PC that usually works. But I couldn't open any mail in AOL. My husband thinks the DSL is surging. I am thinking that DSL may be the problem 'cuz when AOL goes off, I can't use internet explorer either. This is very frustrating.

HEre are the 2nd tests - 2 reports:

How do Iget rid of SPYWARE? I think it comes automatically with AOL. A friend removed our anti-virus program - PANDA - because he said that was slowing down the PC. But from our perspective, it does not, bec PC was slow even without Panda. So we have reinstalled Panda.

Yes both PCs are off same router. Both PCs are just feet apart. The router and DSL are hooked to the Okay PC (PC-ok) and a 2nd cable extends to the sick PC (PC-sk)

So when its down you need to start some ping test

    first ping the gateway
    so in your case
    ping 192.168.2.1
    from either PC whe down
that will check the PC's can see the router

try it when its all working to see the results

    Then ping google.com
that will test if you are getting out side

then ping the IP number you get for the router

that will test if its a DNS issue only

    for spyware

    run an online test
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

also download ad-aware and spybot - update both and run (links in my sig)
otherwise download and run hijackthis and post a log for a member with a shield next to name to decode.

Etaf - here's the dismal status of my PC.

Removed Panda antivirus protection because that was working weird.
Downloaded "Spy Sweeper" to find and remove/quarantine spyware and adware, etc.
tried to reinstall Panda which was going to take 8 plus hours - did not do.

In process of all this, could NOT get online. Error messages coming on screen. Can only operate in "safe" mode. PC won't recognize my printer or allow me to add one. IE and AOL can not detect my internet connection. Whole thing is a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the operating system is damaged. I don't know what service pack I have. PC was made not purchased at a store. If I am to reinstall the service pack, I don't know what to do beforehand to save my work and programs. This is terrible. Can this computer be saved???

how much data do you have ?

do you have a windows CD?

if you can it may be worth copying hjt onto PC and posting a log

    post a hjt log

    HIJACK THIS:

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.
SO DO NOT put hjt onto the desktop or temp files.

create a directory say my documents/hjt

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

I'm not sure I understand. With hjt are all my files and programs saved somewhere in cyberspace??????

also, I can't get online to access any of the sites you gave me.

I need very details and specific instructions cuz I don't understand about all this stuff - I am a beginner.
