Hello

Quick question...
I am getting mixed answers from various manufacturers on this one:

I have a router behind my cable modem and several computers on a LAN 192.168.x.x. Do I still need to have software firewall like say Zone Alarm the computers of the LAN? (I set one of the computers of my LAN as a DMZ on occasion for remote access purposes).

Thanks
Aldo

Both hardware firewalls (routers) and software firewalls should be part of your computer security setup. While a router will prevent intrusion from hackers, it will not necessarily prevent data from being transmitted by a trojan horse program that you might inadvertently download. A permission-based software firewall like Zone Alarm will catch these outgoing signals and alert you to them. It's up to you to determine if the alert is for a legitimate cause, however, which can be difficult because trojans hide their true identity, hence their name. :)
