    With notebook shut down
    Disconnect battery, remove power lead
hold down power button for a full 20 secs
reconnect power ONLY and try again

Was there any pre history to this such as unexpected shutdowns, blue screen of death that is where it goes to a blue screen with a message. Chkdsk starting automatically on boot, a jolt or knock to the netbook etc.

Any event that you know of will help

I was researching this one earlier - this is what I found.

Run a Hard drive manufacturers test.

Beeps could indicate Ram or a Motherboard, Hard drive problem.
Removing and then replacing the Ram sticks may help.
    This will show you how.

We do not solve evrything on Tech Support Guy - of course, but if this is also you
Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS error System Halted?

Compaq 610 T5870 FM950UT#ABA Notebook -Getting that error when I turn it on and it beeps a few times.

under the name Alice - , that is a copy and paste from the other site.

I would exercise caution before considering some of the suggestions you may receive on that site

I think it unlikely that you will be able to run the
but IF YOU CAN, it is certainly worth a try.

There wasn't any blue screen or Chkdsk starting automatically. The harddrive is less than a year old, I had to put a new one in last December.

Not sure how to do the Seagate test, guess I can try the tacktech one sometime.

    Not looking good.
But there may be an inbuilt Hard drive test.
Check these links - they may or not be helpful.

Testing a Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00439024&lc=en&cc=au&dlc=en&product=3827496#N45

Perform a Hard Drive Self Test
    Quote.
'Plug the AC Adapter into the computer.
Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu

Use the Right Arrow or Left Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option. Depending on your BIOS, this may be located below either Diagnostics or Tools .
Select Primary Hard Drive Self Test , and then press the Enter key to start the test.'
    End quote.

This link may just apply to Win 7 and Vista.

    "Test 1 (Quick)
Error: Read failure" ..Is what the self test in BIOS says.

Did it stop at the above or continue to run a Comprehensive Test?
If it stopped there - it sounds like the hard drive may be faulty.
    Is it still under warranty?
