    HI

My dad had all his numbers (bank details etc) on a single word document on a floppy disk instead of keeping them on the hard drive (if i had known i would have asked him to make a backup).

Yesterday when he put the disk in the drive it does not read the disk and after a few minutes asks to format the disk. The disk does not read on other computers and other floppies work on the drive so it is a problem with the disk.

I have ran a couple of programs and the best were badcopy prop and handy recovery to try and get the file back and got a file called File1.doc but cannot read it.

i can open the file in Microsoft word using the "Recover Text from Any File" and all is i get is al lot of text like below:

    Nú4 Ö"bMÝ؂yŒ?9dÏcPâ†YUg!-²E

When i open the file by double clicking on it i get the message box in the attachment.

Is there anyway to retrieve the file?

Try opening it with Wordpad and see what you get.

I kept getting such errors with my disks. Do your dad a favor.
    Get a flash drive.
512 is pretty good for ten bucks, but I can't speak for the shipping. You can probably get cheaper ones, but Memorex is fairly trustworthy...

I have opened it in Wordpad but get the following:

    ·LÖ‚²¶¬µ³OHϪ5̨Œ¿/ÈùÖ

    Instead of text.

Will think about a flash drive but at the moment my dad needs the numbers from that file otherwise he will have to try and get them from the banks etc

Yeah... I know, but I haven't got a clue. Like I said, I went through a whole box of corrupt disks... No idea what to do. Sorry.

Thanks anyway, have been looking around a small bit and some decent prices for these flash drives so will mention that to him and tell him to be more careful next time

I suppose that's the best you can do in this case.

Since it appears that you've already decided it is of no use, why not try what I tried that worked, chkdsk?...

There’s a program out there called “Final Data 2” I’ve used it
on disks with problems like you describe with good results.

It costs about $60.00. And, it may be too late for your disk.
It might be worth a try. Question is, How bad do you want the data?

This is a long shot but try writing a very small file to the floppy. If successful try defragging the floppy and if that works try pulling your files again. If you can't write to the floppy try the defrag anyway, what have you got to lose.
