A friend gave me a floppy she keeps her Christmas card list on. She said she's used this disk for 4 years and keeps it in a floppy storage box at home. She tried to open it this year and it says the disk in drive A is not formatted. (no magnets, no spilled eggnog, etc)

Is there an easy, free way to try to recover this? I don't want to put TOOOO much effort into this, but I'll give it a shot if anyone has any ideas. :)

    Thanks, guys (y)

Floppy disks are a notoriously volatile storage media Dsabol
After 4 years it could be well goosed.
Tell her to make a new disk.

sort of what I was thinking but I told her I would ask around. Like I said, I'm not really game to put too much effort into recovering someone else's Christmas card list. LOL

Is she using the same computer and operating system as when she was able to open the floppy?

If some bit in one particular sector of the floppy is not set correctly. Windows XP will not read the disk an ask if you want to format it. Older operating systems ignore the bit and read the floppy OK.

Yes, try it on a Win98 machine. Or do a serach for "floppy recover". The data can probably be recovered in a readable form if still there.

Also, since alignments of the newer drives vary so much, and the older drives are built so much better, try different floppy drives on different machines before giving up on it.
