I have a large number of folders containing Word letters according to subject.

I opened one called AA holding all my Word letters to the AA (Automobile Association) over the years.

It had corrupted. I hadn't done anything to it. pic attached

Can anyone suggest what has happened please and can I get it back?

There isn't much you could do except check and attempt hard disk repair. The corrupted data may not be recoverable.

To check and repair, open File Explorer, right click on the C drive ( which is where I assume all the files are ) and choose Properties, Tools tab, Check button.

You really need to backup your data regularly, perhaps once a week to a USB stick, or an external USB drive.

Sorry I should have said it is on a USB stick not the hard drive.

    But what is it?

I have never seen anything like it.

    I don't have any viruses.

    Thanks

It is just corruption, your memory stick needs replacement.
