Just bought a 500 gb WD Passport external drive. Backed up my netbook (Win XP) files, then moved to my desktop (also XP). On my desktop some folders on my Passport have been renamed, such as from Documents to Documents.exe and from Music to Music.exe.

I've scanned for viruses, but nothing has come up on either computer or on the hard drive. I'm able to correct the folder names, but I'm afraid there's something else going on. Thanks in advance!

I just moved files by clicking and dragging.

Did you install the Passport software (hopefully not)?

If all you did was click and drag, then you may be right about an infection.

How is the drive formatted? Did you repartition and reformat it before using it (always a good idea)?

Were the files renamed on the Passport, or only after you moved them to the desktop?
