Okay.. I have a sort of big problem. On my Laptop with Windows XP Professional, I have 2 usernames, "mel" and "administrator".. I have only used "mel" until recently, because all of a sudden it started saying there wasnt enough free disk space and it couldn't load the user profile when I'd try to log onto "mel".. so I went onto "administrator" and cleaned out the C drive by deleting un needed files and programs and took a lot of pictures off of the computer and put them onto CDs.. and I deleted a lot of files and folders in "My Documents" for "mel" while I was signed onto the "administrator"

I hope you're still with me.. I know its confusing..

So then I had about 40% free-space on my C drive, so I restarted the computer, and tried to log into "mel" but it never went past the "loading your personal settings" screen, so I turned off my computer, and logged onto "administrator", which loads so fast with no problem. I went back to my C drive and I now have about 7% free disk space, and all of the files and folders I deleted are still there.

I don't know what to do. I was thinking about copying all of the files from "mel" into "administrator" and just deleteing "mel" completely from the computer, but when I tried to do that, it said that programs might not run correctly, so I didn't do it.. I don't know if I have a virus or what.. any help is veryyyyy appreciated. I cannot afford to take this in somewhere and get it fixed, and this computer has to last me through the rest college, and I'm just starting my sophomore year. I have had this computer for a year and has always run perfectly fine until now.

Thank you so much. Here is the HJT log...

What I would suggest that you do is delete your "mel" profile and start afresh. This will mean deleting everything inside the My Documents folder of "mel" so be sure to back up everything you need beforehand.

As with all fixes posted on these forums, if you don't feel comfortable doing something, don't do it. It's always better to ask than go in kamikaze and screw everything up :).

Assuming everything is safely backed up, log in as Admisnistrator, go to Control Panel and click on "User Accounts". Click on your "mel" user, and click on "Delete the account". It will ask you if you want to keep or delete the user's files, click on "Delete Files" and then "Delete Account".

Now re-create your "mel" account, creating it as an administrator. Log out and log back in on the account you just created. The account may take a few minutes to create itself, as when you create a profile it doesn't create all the files - it does this when you log in for the first time.

When you're sucessfully logged in as mel, check your hard drive space. If it is back down to 7% you may need to clean up another folder, but I'll cross that bridge if it's needed.

    MaidenFan :)

Okay.. but when I backup everything on my "Mel" account.. then delete the account.. is there any way that I can get those files back? Or do I have to put everything on Data CD's and then transfer it back to my computer?

The easiest thing to do would be to copy-paste the files you want to back up directly to the Administrator's My Documents folder. This saves CDs and also saves the time spent having to copy everything back.

As to getting the files back that were deleted when the profile is deleted, there is no way of recovering them as far as I know. The reason for deleting and recreating the account is to get rid of all of the files that you may not need.

Out of interest, how big is the hard drive?

do I have to backup the files that i copy and pasted into the Administrator account still?

I backedup "My Documents" from "mel", and I also copied and pasted "My Documents" from "mel" to the "administrator" .. I didn't backup the pasted files though.. if that makes sense?

And my hard drive is 52.5 GB... (I'm assuming you're asking the size of my C drive?)

Well from the sounds of things you've backed up the My Documents from "mel" twice, once to the My Documents of "Administrator" and once to CD, which can only be a good thing.

Answer to your question is no, you don't need to backup what's now in the Administrator's My Documents folder because you have it backed up onto CD anyway.
