Can someone point me to a step by step routine to format my hard drive from 98SE? Also, any tricks to reinstalling that OS on the formatted drive from scratch, or anything else that crosses your mind that I should be aware of?

    Thanks.

Is you system presently operational? Do you have a Windows boot floppy? Do you have the Windows 98SE CD?

Thanks for the reply. (1.) Yes, the system is operational but has a lot of flaws, which aren't correctable with System Mechanic, or the scan disk and defrag utilities in Windows. Haven't been able to update for over a year now . . .all I get when I try to get to the update site at Microsoft is a blank browser screen. (2.) Yes, I have the 98SE CD and can get the boot floppy.

Be sure you have the motherboard CD with all the device drivers.

Look for "unofficial Windows 98SE service pack", Google or Majorgeeks. Single download of all the patches and updates you need. Works with SE only.

Be aware thethat this "service pack" is UNofficial. That is, not formally released by MS and not "necessarily" thoroughly tested.

Previous releases of this "pack" has resulted in non bootable PCs.

Heard of the past problems, but the last one I used from Majorgeeks in conjunction with a clean install worked fine. Not that this will be everyones experience for sure. Thanks for bringing that up.

It is potentially worth trying (expecially on a clean install where "little" would be lost), but I would certainly make sure that I had a stable system before applying that pack. And then I would want to do some fairly extensive testing to ensure my machine stayed stable.
