    Hi,

I am trying to format my c drive and then perform a clean install of Windows 2000.

By mistake I have installed another copy of Windows 2000 on my c drive. Now I want to wipe out everything and start again.

Using the command format c: in DOS, I get the following error:

Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y

Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use.

    Can anybody help?

Are you running format after booting into Windows? How are you getting to the DOS c:\> prompt?

Anyway, just boot to the Windows 2000 CD and you'll see the options to lead your through a format and a clean install to an empty drive.

Let us know what happens ...

    Hi,

I am still having difficulty doing a clean install of Windows 2000.

Let me explain the steps I am following:

    1. I click on SetUp.exe
    2. SetUp copies some files to my PC, then restart my PC.
    3. After Restarting, I am not given the options to format my hard disk.
I am asked whether I want to repair my OS, and the next screen comes
up with the type of repair.
    4. The next screen comes up with
    a. Delete partition (I have only the c drive and cannot delete it)
    b. Install another copy of Windows 2000
    c. Quit

Can anyone list (or know any article) the steps I could follow to format my hard disk and re-install Windows 2000. Please refer to my other postings above.

    Many thanks.

This is closed as a dup post. Please don't start another duplicate post for the same issue. You can keep replying to the thread at the link below. Thanks ....

BTW, I can't tell from your post but it sounds like you're still not booting to the CD. You want to insert the Windows 2000 CD, restart the PC and let it BOOT to the CD. Then you should see an option to run setup by pressing enter. Then the next screen should give you the option to format. Let us know what's happening in the thread I referenced above.
