I'm trying to format my computer that came preloaded with windows vista with my older xp cds, but everytime the cd unpacks the computer crashes saying that windows shut down to prevent an error.

The CDs are fine, i've used them to reformat computers loaded with xp fairly recently.

My computer didn't come with any cds it was preloaded so i dont have the vista install disk. Any thoughts?

The new install crashes before i can get to the part in that guide where i would have the option of downgrading to XP. It crashesas soon as everything is unpacked from the CD.

Sounds like there is hardware that XP does NOT have any drivers for.

Have you checked with the OEM, to see if they have drivers for XP?

Also if the XP CD came with a another machine then it may have ONLY the drivers for the hardware that came with the original machine. Also if the CD came with another machine, then it is also illegal to use the CD on another machine.

What is the error message that is displayed?
If it's a STOP 0x0000007E and mentions the file pci.sys, I'd guess your XP disk is SP1 or earlier. You'll need to slipstream SP2 or SP3 to use the XP disk on a system that has a PCIe bus.

Essentially "upgrade" the SP1 disc you have to SP2 or 3 by combining it with the standalone download of the SP2 or 3 update into a shiny new install disc. Google it and you'll find lots of info on the process.

ok new update for my problems, i formatted the drive and install windows xp via another computer. Not a good idea apparently, because now that i put the hard drive back into my original computer it gives me the error message on every boot up.

Here are some of the specs, hope these may help?

    Q6600 intel core2quad processor
    uses DDR2 ram
the hard drive is a 500g sata drive Hitachi i believe?
got it about a year ago now, its an acer

Please im open to any suggestions.

If your slipstreamed installation CD also has the SATA driver in it, then boot from the CD and do a repair/reinstall.

Why didn't you just install on the computer you wanted it on?

Before continuing, do you have an unused Windows XP licensing key for this system? You said you used the disk with other computers recently. The license is one key = one computer.

Closing thread which is a repost of a thread that was closed because the XP CD is pirated.
