    Heya guys,

Since I've had a good experience with you guys helping me, I thought I'd run an issue by you which I've had forever now..

When I play certain games, I get massive FPS drops during playing. Games with which I'm having this problem currently (and thus, for certain) are Fallout 3, League of Legends, and Left 4 Dead 2

I've tried updating various drivers, killing processen in my task manager, disabling the windows page file, running programs like gamebooster and advanced system care, etc.. etc..

The weird thing is.. after a system reboot, it seems i get a few minutes (5 or so) of normal gaming.. no fps drops or anything.. but after about 5 minutes, they keep happening all the time.. about 20 seconds every minute or so.. even closing the game and restarting doesn't help anything, only a total system reboot seems to give me a little window of normal gameplay..

I've had this problem immediately after a fresh windows install a while ago.. after that, I haven't used this computer for a while because I was in the hospital for about a year for health problems, but now that I'm back the same problems are still there..

The FPS drops also appear to be totally random, and not while something in the game actually (appears) to be happening.. While just standing around in L4D2 and there's not even zombies coming at us.. I get massive fps drops for about 10-20 seconds every minute, making virtually every game unplayable..

I've tried setting most games to their lowest settings, but even that doesn't seem to have any effect.. and considering my processor, I should be able to easily run these games at the higher settings.

If there's any hints are tips you can give me, that would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ThunderingShadow,

I see a lot of information in your post. 90% of which I do not understand, mega lols. However, could you download and install a program called HWMonitor, if you don't already know it records your systems temperature.

    Information & Download: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Just take a couple of screenshots of the HWMonitor while your computer is idle (simply @ the desktop) and while there is a game running. It could well be something is overheating.. (hopefully not)

    :)

and this is during and after..

seems a bit high indeed, but I don't understand why, I've cleaned up my fans and coollers a few weeks ago..

This is likely the cause of your problems, 100°C is too high for that processor it should only ever max out at 71°C.

You say you cleaned up your fans/coolers a few weeks ago, did that include your heatsink? I'm guessing it did but it's always good to ask.

If so, just try giving it another thorough clean, you may need to reapply thermal paste on top of the processor if you haven't already. Also, just make sure the heatsink is clear of any clutter in the case (such as wires covering the fan). If this doesn't help, you might be better off purchasing a more effective heatsink.

Also, make sure your tower isn't near any heat sources (radiators, or anything that is blocking the venting). I know this is common sense but some people don't realize the impact of things like this. :)

    I appreciate the advice,

but yes, I did reapply the thermal paste, like I also did about a year ago when I also had some overheating problems. It was during the summer then, and unfortunately it took me a while to discover that this was the problem..

afterwards, I also reapplied the thermal paste, and completely reinstalled my computer, but even after that these games still had these fps drops..

I must say, my League of Legends has been working more stable after a lot of cleaning and reinstalling, but Left 4 Dead 2 and Fallout 3 still suffer from massive fps drops..

anything else you can recommend to me ?

I would have to agree that both your CPU and your GPU are running a bit on the hot side (moreso the CPU).

I used to run a 8800GT and it would cause no end of problems if it went over 75C, which is within its thermal spec!
Exactly what make and model is the PC (assuming its a brand name like HP, Dell, Acer etc), have you ever upgraded any hardware?
What case fans do you have installed and which direction are they blowing (in / out of the case)?
What cable management do you have in place (if any), its always better to try and secure cables to the inside of the case in order to try and keep the main area as clear as possible. This helps with the airflow through the case.

Try running the games with the side panel off and with a small fan blowing directly at the motherboard. If this stops the FPS drops etc then you can safely say for sure that the problem is caused by the high temps (although would advice to try and get them down anyway).

Also, I would suggest updating Windows, you don't have SP1 installed which was released about 9 months ago, so you are possibly missing important updates and security fixes.

Oops should have noticed the GPU... *facepalm*

You're asking that he update, ensure he's on SP1. I wasn't aware your typical OS software could ease on the temperature of hardware. But then I guess if the OS asks for too many resources its likely to raise the temp... :/

It won't fix the temperature issue. I put it on the end of the post as a suggestion because it is better to keep it up to date than not :)

On that note, another observation for the OP, you appear to have what I would consider an unusually high number of Standard Controllers listed. You may be using default drivers for some components where the correct, manufacturer drivers would probably be better and more efficient. If you can provide the exact make and model of the PC and/or the exact make, model and revision of the motherboard that would be useful.
