I have installed Gator - IM Secure - Zone Alarm and Secure Delivery on my 98 2nd, and now I am having 2nd thoughts as to the merits of the downloads. I also have spybot - all the free systems. I have subscribed to McAfee virus protection and McAfee anti-spyware. With spybot and McAfee anti-spyware I get the notification of the adware stuff through Gator, IM Secure.

What's the conventional wisdom of using these free sites/downloads - I understand the ads that come with them but with PopUpStopper and Google I don't seem to be bothered with pop-ups, so....do the advantages outweight the disadvantages?

    Yep !

I'me not sure about those others right now excpet ZA which is good

    Do the following

    SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
    SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
    definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
    they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize and make sure teatimer in enabled

Do these before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder, run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
    log here

I'm with Cheeseball, isn't Gator a program you don't want? What does it allege to do for you?

When downloading freeware, it is wise to use a well known reputable site. Also, make sure you read the licensing agreement before you install freeware. Without your knowledge some programs will gather information about your computer use, sites you visit, and surfing habits to target you with advertisements.

Of the 4 you mentioned, Zone Alarm & IM secure are ok. Don't know about the others. You do need an antivirus program (AVG is a good free one) and I'd add Spyware Blaster to the mix.
