Can you recommend a free program for scanning documents so that they can be edited afterwards.

You Got Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 ..
See Office Tools >> Microsoft Document Scanning.

If you have Office 2010 .. It's been moved to One Note.
This will OCR to a Word Document.

If you have an Image .. Convert it to a tif .. Then M$ Document Imaging can read the tif image

Thanks I should have said that I have a Dell dimension C521 pc and am running windows xp sservice pack 2 I have a visioneer one touch 9000 scanner. I usually scan to photoshop. I have office 2000. I have downloaded Irfanview but cannot see how get the text recognition bit. My scanner came with paperport which I haven't used. I just tried it scanning to word but all I got was gobbledy gookI am trying to scan some typed documents which I may need to edit.All advice gratefully received but please bear in mind that I am not very good at this and need clear and simple instructions.

I'm not sure if Office 2000 has OCR capabilities.
I usually scan at 600DPI .. Use Photoshop to clean it up .. And save to a tif file ..
Then use office 2003 to read the tif file.
It's been a while since I looked at Irfanview's OCR plugin .. I didn't like it.
It all depends on the Quality of the scan or Image.

I use Irfanview to run my HP scanner ... And I'm trying the OCR plugin right now ..
What are you having Trouble with ??
