I recently acquired a compaq presario F500 with Windows Vista Home Basic. Lately my computer has been cutting out, and a blue screen will appear with an error message stating that my computer has been shut down to protect data and says to restart in safe mode. I've heard of this happening when users start a program, but for me this happens in the middle of what I'm doing, I'll have two or three programs running at once (iTunes, Internet Explorer, and sometimes Windows Live Messenger), and then that blue screen will pop up, and it will freeze the audio i'm listening to (broken record kinda sound) and in the blue screen it will show "***STOP: 0x00000001 (0x81D8EE63, 0x00000000, 0x0000FFFF, 0x00000000)" . I don't recall whether or not a file appeared below that. I also noticed that with other users the computer goes through the process of dumping memory and restarting itself. Mine has never finished the process or restarted by itself, I've had to manually shut it down every time.. not sure if that is a bad thing to do though...

my computer will only get to the second line "initializing data for crash dump" then it freezes. i've tried to let it sit, seeing if it takes time, but it never did anything.

so if that stop code can pinpoint the problem that would be great. but if not, i'll repost with the full error message next time it happens.
