freezes when connected to net

OS Windows media centre,xp pro,
when connecting to the web the connection comes up and then it freeze,for five to ten minutes,ctr,alt delete does not work,mouse moves around but does not open any programs. I have scrolled other threads but have not seen any that matches my problem.

I have run avg antivirus, and avg antispy, and windows defender.
