I have Windows XP running and currently if i leave the computer idle for more than 3 - 4min it freezes. It will not let me ctrl-alt-delete or anything. mouse doesnt move, etc. I have to unplug the computer.

What should I look for causing this?

Freezes can be caused by many things:
    Memory
    Video
    Device Drivers
    Bad Motherboard
    Bad Devices
    System Resources
    Software

Have you been able to run a ScanDisk?
    Defragged lately?

May have too many programs running in the background.

There are several viruses that will do this also.
Boot into safe mode and run a good AV program.
    Also check for ADware.
