Freezing on 'starting windows' screen

While playing a game, I left my PC, when i returned the screen was showing the desktop at the wrong resolution. There was no response when i attempted to use the mouse/keyboard (ctrl alt del etc.). So I turned the pc off and back on again manually. When the boot sequence reached the 'starting windows' screen, the loading bar filled and then the system froze. It continues to do this.

I have tried the hard drive in a friend's PC and it boots perfectly. Please Help!

The problem persists on a stripped system with hard drive connected and no sound card. Also i have tried changing the video card but no improvement.

My pc specs are:
Windows 2000 pro
amd athlon xp 2400+
K7 Triton 400 GA-7VA motherboard (VIA KT400 chipset)
512 mb cruicial ddr pc2100 ram
ABIT Siluro GF4 MX-8X
Soundblaster audigy 2
pioneer DVD drive
