My puter seems to just freeze up maybe once or twice a day. I was playing a cd, of music andi left for about 30 minutes came back music was still playing but the computer was froze, mouse wouldnt move. Other times it just locks up while being in screen saver mode or being online. Its not getting hot, has no spyware, everythings updated, still it locks up. ?????????? Thanks

Have you disabled all power saving features in Windows and in your BIOS?

Can you live without the machine for a day or so? The next thing I would try is booting into Safe Mode and just letting it sit for an entire day and night to see if it locks up. That should help pin down if it is hardware or software, or at least which type of software / hardware it is.

Well, first off it makes it very likely that it is NOT a hardware problem. At least, not an internal one. Do you have any external stuff (printer, scanner, etc...) connected? Those things don't work in safe mode.

So, if you do have that kind of thing, the next step would be to unhook all that stuff and see what happens. I kind of doubt that will work, but it should be tried, just to be sure.

After that, the next thing is to try to pin down which piece of software (or Windows itself) is causing this. I would try going to Start, Run and typing in MSCONFIG. Choose Diagnostic Startup and see if it locks up or not.

If not it is time to choose Selective and start choosing which things should start and which shouldn't, until you find the killer.

I just did a quick google search and found this:

    http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

It goes over some of the MSCONFIG choices and has pictures of what things should look like.

Let us know what you try and what happens.

Well, that's new... ok, go to selective then and just turn off everything. That's ends up doing just about the same thing anyway.

You have done a full antivirus scan, right?

You can do a free one here:
