Try running a HijackThis scan and post the log here to see if there is anything running on your computer that shouldn't be. Also, if Office won't install there is a free alternative with all the Office capabilities and more called OpenOffice.org. I tried it and loved it and it can even save in the .doc format for transportability between comps. The link for OpenOffice is: http://www.openoffice.org/ and the link for HijackThis is below. Hope this helps.

You unzip the file onto your desktop and open the folder it creates then you run HijackThis by double clicking on the dynamite blaster icon. After it starts up, choose run a system scan and save a logfile. After the scan is run a text document will pop up with the scan results. Select all the text, right click, copy and then paste it into a new reply here. If you run into any problems with that, let me know.

You're still using the 4-year old original version of Windows XP instead of using Windows XP SP2, so you're denying your computer of a lot of enhancements and security-related fixes.(n)

You're using AOL 9.0, which is problematic and causes Internet connection problems.(n)

Can you be more specific as to what you're doing with your computer when it freezes/locks up?

Whats happening is this......
While using the computer and several other applications the computer just freezes.
I select a program from my desktop and click it and nothing happens.
I need to reboot my computer . Another problem is Micro Word & Excel I try and use it
but once i get in the program all I can see and do is look at the hourglass. Like i wrote before
i tried to repair/office but the CD didnt launch.

Anytime i get stuck in no mans land I reboot the computer and start over.

Hopefully someone has a remedy.

Thanks

That computer has a 1.8 GHz processor and 768 MB of RAM, so it's not being bogged down because of a slow processor and insufficient RAM.

Reducing the number of automatic running programs in the MSCONFIG startup(tab) list and in the SERVICES list would help.

Reducing the amount of graphic "eye candy" would also help.

When was the last time you cleaned out the buildup of temp/junk files and defragged the hard drive?

open up your case
see if you motherboard has a chipset heatsink / fan combo and make sure it is running
a hot chipset will cause this type of behavior

other: cpu heatsink is full/loaded with dust/particles/cat hairs etc....
hot cpu = freeze/lockups as well

good luck
