A friend of mine has a laptop running XP SP3, and his wife a netbook.

They are connected to the internet by a wireless router.

A week or so ago he received a number of bounced emails apparently sent from his Hotmail account advertising various drugs - the emails were sent to addresses from his Windows Live Mail Contacts.

The 'dead' address ones were returned but he wasn't too happy about his business contacts receiving Viagra ads apparently from him :)

    This has been repeated twice.

His wife also uses Windows Live Mail to access the same Hotmail account.

He has Panda Cloud AV and she Norton Security 2009, both up-to-date.

I have run MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Sophos Rootkit Remover and Trend Housecall online scanner on both machines and found nothing worse than a few relatively harmless bits of adware.

The only other thing is that one of their neighbours shares their wireless connection and I wonder if that could be a problem.

    He does use utorrent.

I'm at a loss asd to what else to do to find the source of the problem

    Any advice most welcome.

Hmm, thanks, but if their computers are clean, where did their contacts get taken from for someone else to send to?

OK thanks, none of that applies here though as there are consecutive emails working alphabetically through his address book, each with 15 addresses in the To: field.

They correspond exactly to his Contacts.

Nonetheless, someone or some virus has managed to do it. There's not much you can do, other than forgetting about that e-mail account and creating a new one.

    Dear phantom010,
I had a yahoo.com e-mail(in fact, the first one i created), and "the innocent i" set a simple user name and password,a long time back. Then i sort of migrated to Hotmail, gmail, zoho, etc. I recently had to correspond to my cousin in USA, using Yahoo mail, and she said, ever since she received my mail, she is being bombarded by spam! I disabled my Yahoo account, created a new one with a real-strong password, SINCE CLICK-JACKING IS ANOTHER WAY OF ACCESSING YOUR/MINE MAIL! I told her to do the same( Common Sense perhaps)!BTW,phantom010 with a signature!(y) I don't know how costly and difficult it is to find a skillfull tecchie with a helpful attitude and does not puncture your wallet in your country, but here i reckon it's free if you have real friend who goes out of his/her way to troubleshoot! The imp. thing is knowledge!:)

Well, I figured some people needed to be reminded not to disappear for days, or weeks, after posting. We often work quite hard to find a solution for them... So, we appreciate feedback...;)

    Dear phantom010,
You got me there! There was a reason for the long absences . I was preparing for my entrance exam for the medicine course and i am glad to inform all my friends and other well-wishers here that i have scored a percentile which places me in the top Fifty! I am sure to get admission into a premier college:). That's only half the job done. Anyway it is a good starting point i hope! My ultimate aim is to specialize in Diabetology or endocrinology and find ways to prevent/contain this new scourge affecting almost all the couch-potatoes and those who are genetically cursed by it! IT HAS BEEN PROVED IN USA THAT OVER-CONSUMPTION OF SOFT DRINKS WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO DIABETES, ESPECIALLY IN THE TEENAGERS! KINDLY PASS ON THIS FACT TO YOUR NEAR AND DEAR ONES AND HOPE THEY LISTEN TO REASON!

Medicine is a noble cause. I wish you all the best!

I wasn't referring to your absence at all. :)

I was referring to cases where members are asking for help and disappearing for days or weeks. I don't recall you were asking for help before your long absence.

    Dear chrisfixit,
utorrent by itself when you run a WOT check is "almost" harmless! Unless your folks are using Linux for torrent downloads, it is an invitation for real trouble, because the websites needed to visit, the torrent downloads needed, the software downloaded on the sly are the "CYANIDE POTION IN THE NEAR HARMLESS VESSEL CALLED uTORRENT". The pcs are certain to get infected, either they be, by-->viruses, trojans,Hijackers etc, and that's the way these sharks gain access to the e-mails. Cracking an e-mail password is"infant's work for these pros. So, why swim in shark infested waters? Please run anti-rootkit programs 1) Sophos : download site : http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/, 2) GMER; download site : http://www.gmer.net/. You have to run GMER in "SAFE MODE". There are many other such excellent softwares available. Note that ,as a rule of thumb, the results when you run a anti-rootkit , should not show "process Hidden" and that means rootkit infection! Please don't try to clean them, instead come here and the experts will advise you! I REALLY DON'T LIKE WI-FI, A STYLISH SOUNDING NAME BUT A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD!

    Dear phantom010,
Thank you for the kind words! Hope i can stick to the noble ethics the medical profession stands for at the end of the day.
