frozen, can't access word processing, internet, screensaver pictures blobs of color

I am using Windows 98, IBM Aptiva three years old. When I log on my wallpaper is blobs of color, the icons are enlarged, no cursor, can't assess documents saved in word processing, can't access internet

lst message: change pics to
2nd message: this program has performed illegal operation and will close.

Can't close windows without turning off system by using switch on back of Stack
