is this possible... this question will seem exceedingly n00bish... but i'm not up on LAN ... is it possible to plug two computers together VIA a CAT5 cable and use play games over an LAN ....   sorry :( lol i feel stupid for posting this but me and a friend tried... didn't work so i'm guessing you DO need an internet connection or something?

What you are saying would have to been done through a network (LAN (Local Area Network)) although because there is only 2 computers that you want to connect together you could just user a cross-over cable (Patch Cable) and use that.

Now if you computer internet connection comes through as a network cable into your computers network card you would have to plug the cross-over cable into another network card. If not then it doesnt matter.

If your internet comes into your computer as a usb port or wireless then you can bridge the 2 connections (Internet and cross-over cable) so the computer connected at the other side will also have an internet connection that runs through your computer.

    Sorry for babbling.

SIMPLE ANSWER - You need a cross-over cable / patch cable. Doesnt matter if its Cat5e or Cat6 although Cat6 is faster.
