I finally broke down and bought a GPS.

I checked the software version and it doesn't have the newest one listed on the internet.

I will have to buy a mini-usb/usb cable to download the newest software version.

My question is it worth it? Far as I understand it will not effect the maps as those have to be bought as a package.

I am wondering what changes it might make and would they be worth it?

Garmin will upgrade your maps to the newest version that aviable when you purchase your unit. There is a 60 day period from the date you register for this. It is worth it since you get updated maps.

I just bought the cable and spent about 2 hours updating to the new maps.

Thanks for the info as I probably would have missed out on the map update.

DB-I bought it new and the cable didn't come with it but was listed as an accessory.

I went back to Target and got the cable for $14 and the price on the GPS was back to the normal price of $199.

I paid $129 for mine on sale.

Thanks again for the input.

I wonder if I should go ahead and leave the Download Manager and the rest of the stuff on my pc?

I probably should have opted to load it directly to my Garmin instead of to my pc then to the Garmin.

No problem keeping it on the PC as a backup.

Next time buy a cable from
ebay "buy it now" a few (2 or 3) dollars free shipping.

Make a trip to Florida this past week and guess what the Garmin froze up and had to take it back to Target and get a new one. Lucky they had a instore 30 day return policy.

Re-registered and did the map update.

Noticed this little line in the thank you email:

Thank you for ordering the nüMaps Onetime™ City Navigator® North America NT 2011* for your nüvi® 255W (1VA245828).

*This free map update will update the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. New geographic map data will not be added.

I hope this meant it updated the map data already loaded when I bought it and not just duplicated it.

They're saying that if you had USA maps, it won't come back with USA and Canada maps. :)

I guess the key word was "geographic".

Now to get ready for Colorado in September.

Thanks

I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it. Clint Eastwood
BTW, I have this same policy. :D
