My daughter has a Gateway 556GE computer. If it has been on a while and you try to re-boot ,as when installing Windows updates, it will get to the Gateway screen and no further. If you let it sit for 20 minutes, it will boot. I checked the System Events and it said that a driver for the hard drive controller wouldn't load. I E Mailed Gateway support and they told me to do a System Restore. I can't understand that. Has anyone had this problem?

    Start with a disk check.

Go to Start > Run, and type:

    chkdsk /r

Answer "Y" and reboot to let the disk check run.

SR may fix the problem, and if you have made few changes to your system since the last point, it may work, but I suspect they suggested that for lack of any other ideas.

What makes you think heat? An easy way to test is to open the case and put a small fan near the machine to see if it runs better.

Try going to Device Manager and right-clicking the IDE controller. Choose "Update" and let it connect online.

I feel that it is heat because when it is allowed to sit,off for 20 minutes it boots right up. I will do what you suggested. Thank you for the help.
