I need some help on a buddies laptop. It has a swappable cdrw/floppy. I had to wipe and recertify his hard drive and have freshly loaded W98SE and all current drivers that I can find on Gateway's site. He has the second most recent BIOS version, not the latest, but from what I can find the latest version won't cure this. The problem is the machine doesn't see the CDRW when it's installed, but does see the floppy when it's installed. Other than that it runs fine. We have a 'known-good' (brand new) cdrw. My only options at this point appear to be a new motherboard (different drive controller????), or try the BIOS flash (doubtful). I read there was a software program installed on the computer called Softek BayManager but he has lost disk 1 of the 2-disk Restore CD set so I'm not having a lot of luck there. Anybody have any well-educated guesses or maybe a Gateway restore disk to try????? At this point any help would be appreciated. TIA

HEY, don't all answer at once. Can't believe I'm the first one to experience this or that someone doesn't have some sort of idea about this. :(

Some of us are in bed <G>
When you say known good CDRW, is it the correct one for the machine?
