In reinstalling everything after the last hard drive crashed, I find that whilst I can install most programs from retail disks, two of the older disks cause a dos-like box to appear, with a cursor jumping madly around within it, seemingly at random. The box is titled C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM\GDI.EXE. No error messages appear, but the installation proceeds no further. Any ideas?

What software are you trying to install, and on what version of Windows?

GDI.EXE is the Graphics Device Interface.

I've misplaced one of the disks at the moment, but one is BACKGAMMON by GSP. The missing disk happens to be a different program of backgammon by a different publisher. I am running XP Pro, on which the disks have always installed before.

Fixed. For a reason unassociated with this problem, I ran SCANNOW. This problem vanished after that!
