I moved a PIII computer hardware into another case and the video card is acting funny. During the move, I had to remove all the dust/gunk stuck on the video card fan (it hasn't been touched for 3 years so all the hardware was full of HUGE dust balls). I put in a new hard drive, power supply, different DVD-ROM (it's not new but works), and used canned air to get rid of as much dust as possible. What I couldn't remove, I delicately used needle nose pliers to grab the huge dust balls caught in the fans and loosened the dust with slightly damp qtips with a bit of isopropyl alcohol (it's all I had), and more canned air.

I did not remove the CPU or RAM when moving the mobo.

I did a fresh install of Windows 98SE (with all security updates) and Gentoo Linux. I used Partition Magic 8.0 to partition the drive and have Boot Magic installed as well.

During the start up of Win98, the boot screen "blinks" midway through, i.e., the screen goes blank for about half a second, and the boot screen comes back. Once booted, the screen "blinks" again when the start up programs loads (explorer, Norton AV 2002, Zone Alarm Pro, etc.) It also blinks whenever I try to access the Control Panel.

I've checked the seating of the video card and monitor -- nothing is loose. I've uninstalled the March 2004 Nvidia driver to the previous version (December 2003) and it still blinks. This doesn't happen in Gentoo, but then again, it's not fully up and running yet -- I've got Gnome installed and the video card doesn't blink when I'm in Gentoo.

    System specs:

    CPU: Intel Pentium IIIE, 900 MHz (6.5 x 138)
Motherboard: Asus CUV4X (1 ISA, 5 PCI, 1 AGP Pro, 1 AMR, 3 DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipset: VIA VT8604/5/6 ProSavage PL133/PM133/PN133
    Memory: 512 MB (SDRAM)
    BIOS Type: Award Medallion (07/25/00)
Video card: NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200
Sound card: Creative SB Live! 5.1 Sound Card
    Hard drive: 40GB Maxtor 7200 drive (6E040L0)
    DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-104
    CD-ROM: Sony CDU4811 (48x CD-ROM)
Two fans: one case fan blowing out and one pci slot fan blowing out.

I'd appreciate any ideas on what could be causing this...
