    I have Windows 98 and I’m using Word 97.

Whenever I try to type a >"< (quotation mark) I instead
get a > | < (vertical black bar, not exactly like this but heavy and black). If I immediately hit backspace the >"< marks appear. This also happens with >-< (dashes) only they become a >|< if I hit >RETURN<.

One final problem, this one should be in the book but I can’t find it. How do I increase the repeat rate for when I hold a key down? Somehow it’s changed and it is now very slow.

As far as the verticle bar thing, that sounds like a font problem or a video memory problem. DO the charachters print out correctly when the are messed up on the screen? For the second, you can change the repeat rate in control panel under the keyboard settings.
