Okay , this is going to be a very long post . So bear with me here

I have an acer aspire 5742g laptop . I use wifi at my home , and the wireless network seemed to work fine there.

Then after a few days I came to the hostel . We have wifi in the hostel , so I tried to connect my laptop with the wifi . And there is a message that came , "Unable to connect to stes(name of the wifi network ) , earlier I thought that it was a temporary thing and that it would work the next day, but then the next day , my room mates arrived and their laptops connected easily without the error message .

1)When I click on the wifi icon on the right hand side bottom bar , I can see the network , but it does not connect , and gives me the same error message .

2)When I click on Network and Sharing Center , and then on manage wireless network , I don't see the name(stes) of the wireless network(So I can't even remove it)

3)I have tried uninstalling, installing, updating my network adapter , drivers etc . but none of the things have worked .

I can't seem to figure out what the problem is . Its really bugging me now :| , I formatted my laptop , restored it to factory settings , nothing worked.

I also tried to connect through a hotspot which I made from my mobile and it got connected easily without any problem .

Can anyone help me out here ?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify the desired network and also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I can't see any clues to the problem.

I'm wondering if a firewall or security suite could be configured (or corrupted) to prevent connection to an unsecured network and result in that message. What firewall or security suite is on the system?

i have edited you post , as we are a family friendly site

also the 2nd post re - N and G adapters - keep it just to that subject and DO NOT start fault finding on the other thread - keep all that here

on post #10 TerryNet asked
Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site.
did you do that

then I formatted the system
if you used the recovery CDs that come or are built from the PC - I suspect that there could still be trial ware on the PC

do a tcp/ip reset

the router's wireless mode can be restricted to 'g.' 'g/n' or 'b/g/n' and then an adapter that will only work with G cannont connect to a network setup to only accept N
the adapters should all be backward compatible

whats the router set to for wireless

#19 ·
Its of the G type . but the adapter on my machine here shows only "n" type :| . Is this the cause to the problem ?

my friends have adapters which have b/g/n type . Have I installed wrong driver updates? Because earlier(2 months back ) i could connect to the same network with ease .:|

#20 ·
Its of the G type . but the adapter here shows only "n" typ
why do you say that
in your ipconfig /all it shows as

Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to identify hardware in Device Manager

right click on the device Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter

from the menu choose
properties
Click on the Details Tab
Under the Property - drop down
Select hardware ids
Right click and select all
Then right click again and select copy
Copy and paste that information here

You should see a code similar to this

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

please reply with the full code for your device(s)

The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086&REV_34

Vendor ID = 8086
Device ID = 008A

Post back those two numbers make sure we know which is vendor ID and which is device ID

These codes can be looked up at this site http://www.pcidatabase.com/

As an example the link for that database tells us that;
Vendor ID code 8086 is for this vendor - Intel Corporation
Device ID code 008A is for this device - Intel Centrino Wireless-N1030

Also in the earlier message I meant that my system had an n type adapter . but the router I assume has a "g" type one .

Ok - so lets review the situation

1) What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

2) lets see another ipconfig /all and three ping tests - see how below

3) Does the laptop connect with wireless connect else OK , cafes etc

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ping Tests
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

Start> Run {search bar in Vista/W7}> type CMD to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

For Windows 8
to open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

Type the following command
Ping {then a space and then add the number that is shown against the item labelled "default gateway" shown in the results from the ipconfig /all}
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
Post back the results in a reply here
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
For your information only
these tests will check various stages of the connection, the first ping test, ping default gateway checks to see if you still have a connection to the router.
The next two Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152 tests the connection to internet. google is to test by name and the ping test using a number is checking that a connection exists without DNS.
these tests then confirm if there is a dns issue on the connection.

OK - I would get rid of norton and also use the removal tool for mcafee -

any others on the PC, AVG ???

We also needed to see the tests when connected to the network - as we know it works with the HTC

Norton Removal Tool
I would recommend that you restart the PC and run the removal tool for a second time - I have found instances where the removal tool needs to be run twice to fully remove all traces of norton and symantec from the PC

All Versions - The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products, Norton 360 and Norton SystemWorks 12.0 from your computer.
