I just got a new mobo (Gigabyte 990FXA-UB3) and a new CPU (AMD FX-6100). Gigabyte has been telling everyone that in order to use these components together, one must update the BIOS with your old processor (for me, a Phenom II x4) for the new processor to work. How does one go about doing this? I don't understand how you update the BIOS for one processor to work with another. Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

Aside from this BIOS issue, I shouldn't have any problem connect these new components should I?

These shouldn't cause any problems together should they?

You install the old processor and run the system with the old processor, then you update the BIOS via the Gigabyte @BIOS utility, or use a DOS boot disk ith the DOS version of the update, or from within the BIOS if it supports it; refer to the Gigabyte instructions, either on their website, CD, or manual. Once you update the BIOS, you can then power off the system, remove the old processor and install the new one.

How to flash BIOS: http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/HowToReflashBIOS.html

And link to the downloads section: http://ca.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/download-center.aspx?kw=ga-990fxa-ud3

Also you posted an incorrect model number, its a GA-990FXA-UD3 and you must also verify the revision number of the board; 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2.

The revision is printed right on the motherboard, the BIOS version may also be printed on the box or on the board as well; you may get lucky and get a board with a new enough BIOS to support the FX processor. You need BIOS version F3 for the 1.0 and 1.1 boards or FB for the 1.2 board.

Edit: Downloads for your revision: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3996#dl

Note you only need update to the latest version as it has all previous fixes included.

What is the exact model of the Phenom you have, ie: HDZ940XCGIBOX It'll be marked on the CPU itself.
