My old HD is in poor condition so I added a new one. Since the old HD still works fine, can I just leave it in place as a backup and wait for it to crash and burn or am I going to regret it later?

You said it was in poor condition but it works fine... You probably want to change it when you hear a clicking noise. Until then I would transfer all my data on to the new one until its time to really switch. :)
