I have to get a laptop. I need only an economy package, to do text editing with a graphics app, and connect with the desktop at night; NOTHING more.

What should I stay away from???

I think you might tell us your average budget you want to pay that will narrow it down somewhat.

    $600

Most lines have a base model at that range. What makers/models do I avoid - such as Dell, for lack of customer service, etc., ...

Thanks for the tip, colmaca. I was just about to close the deal on one of those.

If you have any experience with fischer-price, or tonka, or hasbro, I don't need it. Have a G'day, mate!

Oh thats cool, didn't know they sold em for that cheap

Anyway, Dell really isn't as bad as they used to be, if that's the best deal you can find I'd just go with it

i got a Acer and had no trouble with it,got it a few years ago for $1600 AU,Prices in aust now come down under $1000 for base models.thats about $500 US or there abouts
i'd be happy getting a Dell as well.
you might look at the upgarde options as there base models some require more RAM,ect.

Try to avoid anything with a fast "desktop" processor in it. They are problematic with overheating as they were never designed for laptops where you cannot get rid of the heat. But they are cheap.....

This sounds like good advise, kiwi..., however,

I've never heard, or read, of a processor that 'allows' a fast link from the desktop, to actual opening of the app, and is subject to high heat.

Do you dis-recommend any makes, or models, with the overheat problem?

    Thanks...

Dell has recently changed their sales package. 'Bare-bones', is almost a 'zero service' package, saving a hardware problem. 'Premium sell', includes top-end customer service, including software navigation.

I don't need software help; just a l/top, off-the-shelf model, from a manufacturer with good hardware.

    Thanks!
