I was trying to install WinXP on a computer that had 98 on it. I reformatted the HDD to NTFS, and when I rebooted, I got an error message saying that ntldr couldn't be found, so I made a floppy with ntldr, ntdetect, and boot.ini, which solved that problem. But now I have another problem I can't get around. It says now that hal.dll is missing, which is understandable considering the drive is completely blank. I can't get into DOS at all, my only options are to restart or sit there and stare at the screen. Help me.

Remove all the partitions ("unformat" the drive). How did you do the NTFS format? In any case, format with XP setup from the XP CD and not with a third-party utility.

DOS is of no use since it can't read, manipulate, or recognize NTFS partitions. Use only NT-based tools.
