I have Widows 98se. When on the internet screen hangs quite frequently. Mostly at random sites, but always on Microsoft down load and Outlook Express. I always manage to escape with control/alt/delete. In fact It hung when accessing this site.

You Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill IE or to reboot? Is this only occuring while browsing, or do you frequently hang running apps?

What are your computing habits? If you have a bad habit of installing just about every piece of shareware/freeware, download assistants, web gadgets, weatherbug, etc, you may have registry issues and/or other programs kicking your system's ***.

If you haven't defragged in quite some time, I would suggest booting into Safe Mode and running a thorough Scandisk followed by a defrag. That alone may help you considerably.

Do that, think about the other questions while doing the scan/defrag and get back with us if you are still having trouble, but be sure to include more info.

    Thanks HuskerDhu
    I'm fairly new to computers.
I've run scandisk and defrag, but no improvement. I ctrl-alt-del to kill IE. It hangs most frequently when running apps. I have occasionally installed frreware from mags.
After ctrl-alt delete this morning said <unknown> not responding. Asked for details which started: <unknown caused an invalid page fault in module<unknown> at 0000ff80ech
    Register:
KAX=000000fCS=0167 KIP=bff80ech=KFLGS and so on. Any help?

Might help to see what you have running, try this:
    Go to http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/ :

    Download StartupList 1.51

After unzipping the file, run it. You will see a text file displayed. Copy/paste the file directly to a reply. To copy/paste, when the file is open, click Edit>Select All > Edit > Copy and then right click on a reply window here and select "paste".

    Some more things to checkout.

    pctptt.exe

Only needed once, when you first install your modem. Can disable with Startup Manager.

    Hi Virtual Me

Couldn't get back yesterday, my ISP was down all day.
I have run Spybotafter updates. The first time it showed a lot of reds, but kept repeating itself for two hours. So uninstalled and re installed. this time no reds showed only some greens.

I've down loaded a patch for the scanner. but now I'm lost. I uzipped it but can't do anything with it. How does one install it on the scanner?

    Regards
    don

    Your Welcome Don!

    Glad everything is running smooth.

    Somehow I missed this.

    Did you get it installed?

    If not.

The patch in my above post, is a executable file. It don't need to be unzipped. All you should have to do is double click on it.

Then again if your not having any trouble now you may not need it.
