I'm using windows 98 and IE 6. The second time I attempt to download a file on the internet (bank statements, attachments in email, etc) the dialog box "Getting file information" hangs indefinitely. Normally, this box appears very briefly and is hardly noticed. I am able to download one file per session without trouble, but on the second file I always get the above problem. The only recourse is to reboot (the system does not hang, only that dialog box. In other words, I can cancel out and continue using the system - but cannot download another file until re-boot).

    Any thoughts?

Call your ISP's technical support to ensure all your connection settings are correct.

Get free Zone Alarm personal firewall anti-hacker countermeasure from http://www.zonelabs.com. (not the demo) Don't let anything out to the Internet you don't know what it is.

Update your antivirus, temporarily disable your screen saver and scan with your anti-virus set to scan All Files. Update and scan bi-monthly. Create your anti-virus' Rescue disk(s) and update them after each Windows anti-virus update.

You can scan on-line to double-check your Windows scanner at http://housecall.antivirus.com

Also scan for spyware... click on Ad-Aware for the download.
Its worth your time & a very good program.

    Savvy :)

also do not have anything you don't need in your startup... it uses up alot of resources... to take them out of startup go to run & type in msconfig & click ok. Go to Startup & take the checks out of items you don't need . First click Apply & then Click OK & reboot

Thanks for the advice. I tried the Ad-Aware and it did the trick.

    Downloading functions much better now.
